Scientists in Spain have said that those who enjoy supping a pint or two rate their health and happiness levels higher than teetotallers and ex-drinkers.

Experts at the University of Murcia analysed data from more than 33,000 respondents to the country's 2012 and 2017 National Health Surveys.

The research found that moderate drinkers have a higher rate of good physical health rating it at 80 per cent compared to half of abstainers.

Meanwhile, 90 per cent considered their mental health to be 'good' compared to 80 per cent of non-drinkers.

One of the study's authors, Professor Ernesto De la Cruz-Sanchez, said: "Beer consumption shows better indicators to physical, mental and emotional health than in abstainers and ex-drinkers.

"Research has suggested that low doses of alcohol can improve heart health and the immune system."
