According to new research from the UK and the US, scientists have discovered that modifying a protein used in Botox can ease pain.

Dr Maria Maiaru, from the University of Reading, said: "These new Botulinum molecules are effective in reducing pain-like behaviour in models of human pain.

"We believe that this approach could open the way for the development of pain treatment to improve the quality of life of millions of people living with chronic pain."

Research has suggested that the treatment could be effective for up to five months at a time.

The modified Botox could eventually replace drugs, which can only be used for a relatively short time period due to the risk of addiction.
