Skinny genes are the secret to people losing weight

A study has found that someone's ability to shed the pounds is dependent on 14 'skinny genes' as opposed to exercise and dieting.

Experts at the University of Essex performed DNA tests on 38 people in Britain aged between 20 and 40 – who were all instructed to follow their regular diets and lifestyle habits for the duration of the experiment.

Participants were weighed both before and after the study and it was found that those with a higher number of the genes slimmed down more over the eight-week period.

Lead researcher Dr Henry Chung said: "This study highlighted some important genes associated with taking inches off the jeans, but it’s important to remember that the genes will do nothing without exercise and lifestyle changes as they are all interlinked.

"If we can better understand someone’s specific genetic profile, hopefully, this will translate to better and more successful interventions for improving health outcomes."
