A new pill could mimic the health benefits of running

Researchers in Denmark have developed a pill that can replicate the health benefits of running at high speed for 10 kilometres through a molecule known as LaKe.

The molecule's chemical properties are the key to imitating the body’s metabolic response to exercise and fasting. LaKe contains a combination of lactate and ketones – chemicals used by the body for fuel that can increase the production of appetite-suppressing hormones.

The pill has only been tested on rats so far but the first clinical trials in humans have started at Aarhus University Hospital.

Professor Thomas Poulsen, a scientist from Aarhus University, said: "In practice, the molecule brings the body into a metabolic state corresponding to running 10 kilometres at high speed on an empty stomach.

"When lactate and ketone levels in the blood increase, the production of an appetite-suppressing hormone increases and the level of free fatty acids in the blood decreases.

"Patients who cannot perform strenuous exercise will benefit greatly from a drug that can boost these levels."
