Delroy Chuck chosen as Jamaica’s 1973 Rhodes Scholar
At just 21 years old, Delroy Chuck was named Jamaica’s 1973 Rhodes Scholar, an impressive achievement that capped his academic and extra-curricular success. A teacher at Holy Childhood High School and part-time lecturer at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Chuck was selected from a competitive field of candidates following an interview with a selection committee headed by the governor-general.

Named 1973 Rhodes Scholar
Delroy Chuck, BSc, 21-year-old teacher at Holy Childhood High School and part-time lecturer at The UWI residing at 21 Petunia Way, Mona, was chosen as the 1973 Jamaica Rhodes Scholar on Thursday night.
Chuck, who will be 22 on December 22, was selected from a field of three candidates who were interviewed by a selection committee headed by the Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Clifford Campbell at King's House. One of seven children of Pearl Chuck and the late James Chuck, shopkeeper of Christiana, Manchester, he attended the Ritchies Primary School, Clarendon and Kingston College (KC). He attended KC from 1962 to 1969 and was successful in both the Cambridge GCE 'O' level and 'A' level examinations.
After leaving Kingston College, he attended The University of the West Indies, graduating with a BSc degree in special mathematics this year. Later, he assumed a teaching post at Holy Childhood and part-time lecturing at the university in general mathematics.
Chuck was engaged in several extra-curricular activities during his years at both Kingston College and at the university.
At KC, he was captain of the school's lawn tennis team and participated in football and cricket at inter-house level. He was deputy headboy from 1968 to 1969, president of the Interact Club, and a member of the chess and debating societies and the Student Christian Movement.
After schoo,l he became a youth leader at the Kingston Parish Church and youth leader for the YMCA. At The UWI, he represented the Mona campus at inter-campus debates and was the news editor of the University Magazine. He was also Taylor Hall's representative on the Guild Council.
Chuck's selection will be recommended to the Rhodes Trustees at Oxford for ratification.
Other members of the selection committee were T.E. Sealy, editor of The Daily Gleaner; Dr R.K.D. Levy, head of the St John's Ambulance Brigade; the Rev Earl Thame, Everard Nelson, president of the Rhodes Scholar Association, Dr Trevor Munroe, lecturer at The UWI, and Dr E.V. Ellington, secretary.
