Take it Easy Mommy

It is often said, 'Momma knows best' but let's be honest, this is no overnight feat but rather a lot of hard work accompanied by trial and error.

Rosannie Hewitt, mother of a two-year-old boy, shared with Flair that initially motherhood was tedious. Not just because she was taking care of a life other than her own, but with the lack of her own mode of transportation and a hectic work schedule it became overwhelming.

"I spent three months, which seemed to be less, at home nursing my wounds and baby and it was tough. Proper time management wasn't something I was capable of. Time moved so fast and I was always left lagging behind. When it was time to return to work, there were a lot of things to do," said Hewitt.

These included introducing him to formula, which her son hates, learning the art of packing the baby bag, purchasing a stroller and preparing meals, all while getting ready on time for work. She admits that her son was not one that readily adjusted to changes, so when it came time to carry him to the nursery, all hell broke loose. She had to be up by 4:30 a.m., be out by 6:30 a.m. in order to drop him off at nursery and get to work on time. Initially, she found it difficult to adjust and would often get to work late, but she has now mastered the art of proper time management.

Schedule adjustment is something many mothers go through. Victoria Beaumont, mother of two, five and three - highlighted that the changes don't just affect your organisation but every aspect of your life.

"It affects the way you speak and even eat. For example, if you want them to maintain a balanced diet, you have to watch what you eat as well. You can't just get up and party or have a girls' night when you feel like it. Every decision you make affects them. They are constantly in the forefront of all your thoughts," said Beaumont.

However, there is something about these little bundles of joy that keeps a mother's heart going. "I am always happy to come home and see my precious darlings," she said.

Mothers agree that the initial stage of motherhood comes as a shock and might leave you feeling a little unprepared. So here are a few tips from mothers that will help our new mothers:

Prepare clothes and pack baby bags overnight. There are too many things to do in the morning to leave things that you can do overnight for the next day. You are no longer just getting yourself ready, and while they are small, it does take some time.

Prepare meals before the appointed time if you can. Fruits that can be peeled from overnight, do it.

Wake up at least an hour earlier than you usually do to give yourself enough time to get you and your child(ren) ready, in addition to a 15-minute window for accidents.

Listen to every advice, but follow your instincts. At the end of the day, every mother's journey is different and while some things may work for your child, others will not.

Do not be too hard on yourself. Just show your child all the love you can and ensure they know you love them.
