Eyebrows on Fleek 101

'Eyebrows on fleek' is a popular phrase that has been sweeping the nation both locally and internationally. For those not in the know, 'fleek' means on point, and while it originated from the eyebrows, it has progressed to all other areas of the body as well as utilised to reflect a person's lifestyle.

Definition aside, how many women really know how to get those eyebrows of theirs on fleek? We have taken all approaches from contouring, shaving, to waxing or even threading those brows to perfection. But maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and start with aligning the right eyebrow size and form with facial shape and bone structure.

So, Flair Magazine sought 'fleeking' assistance from make-up artiste Kimberly Mayne, and here is what she had to say on eyebrows 101.

Mayne advises that you think of your facial features - eyes, nose and mouth - as the picture and your eyebrows the frame. What better way to enhance a great picture than by having an equally comparatively great frame? According to Mayne, it is highly recommended that when shaping your eyebrows, you take your face shape into serious consideration.

There are six main face shapes: long or oblong, oval, round, heart, square and diamond. Mayne went in-depth in providing a guide, showing which eyebrow shape best suits each facial structure.

 

Oblong/long

 

If you have a long or oblong face, the aim, she says, is to create a flat brow shape, "The horizontal shape of the brow will detract from the length of the face, and give the illusion of a shorter face. Also, ensure that the brows aren't too short and that they end in line with the outer corner of the eye, which will help to add width."

 

Round

 

She asserted that a round face requires eyebrows to be shaped in a high arch as this will help to give the appearance of a longer face, "Avoid curving the brows as this will only emphasise the roundness of the face."

 

Heart

 

Sweethearts with heart-shape faces have more instructions to follow: "They should start on a low diagonal at the front of the brow and then go up on an angle, creating a slight arch gradually adding more volume, which will help add more length to the forehead and balance out the pointy chin," advises Mayne.

 

Square

 

The fact that square shaped faces have a square forehead and a square jaw line, results in the face having very strong features, so Mayne proposes that those rocking this facial structure should ensure that they create a brow with a soft natural medium-sized angle, "They should not be too thick, otherwise it will make you look harsh and emphasise your face shape."

 

Oval

 

For oval face women, you already have the ideal facial shape, compatible with almost all eyebrow shapes. Mayne notes, "A soft angled brow is recommended as it will complement your face shape and enhance your look."

 

Diamond

 

For the diamond-shape feminine faces, those highly angular by nature, it is recommended by Mayne that a slightly curved eyebrow is created as this will help to soften the seemingly pointed shape of the face.
