Golden Globes trend watch

The Golden Globes is one award show where we can always count on the unexpected to happen, but what's certain are the beautiful gowns cascading down the red carpet. This year there were no jaw dropping surprises, or any one look that stole the show. For the most part, everyone played it safe - that is, if you consider wide sternum baring plunging necklines to be safe. Usually, trends which dominate the red carpet trickle down to weddings or formal events, and today we are taking a look at the dominant trends which we will certainly see aroound. 

 

Pretty in pink

 

What's not to love about this rosy hue? Softer than red, it bestows an innate princess-like look more than any other colour. Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow wore that bubblegum pink Ralph Lauren gown in 1999 and won the coveted statue? Well this year's pink gowns are far from minimalist, but are laden with intricate details. From Lily Collins in her baby pink Zuhair Murad gown featuring embroidery details to the stunning Carrie Underwood who wowed us in an Iris Serban gown featuring structured ruffles. Zoe Saldana seemed to float gracefully down the red carpet in a Gucci gown with layered ruffles.

Sunny Yellow

 

Everyone knows that yellow is not any easy colour to pull off, whether it's paint for your kitchen walls or to wear down a red carpet. Choosing the right yellow requires a bit of thought. It's a risk, and if done right, the payoff is striking, for yellow is such a happy and endearing colour. Viola Davis who also picked up the win for her role in Fences, looked statuesque in a bright yellow Michael Kors gown. Actress Emily Ratajkowski's silk gown by Reem Acra had a lot going on, but somehow it all seemed to work because she wore it well. Natalie Portman paid homage to Jackie O Kennedy in a Prada column dress.

Metallic

 

Another huge trend was glitz and glam. The ladies sparkled down the red carpet in metallic gowns featuring intricate beading or sequins. Priyanka Chopra and Sofia Vergara accentuated their killer curves and highlighted another huge trend of the night plunging neckline. Chrissy Teigen's Marchessa gown also featured ruffles and metallic embroidery.

Plunging neckline

 

The plunging neckline silhouette is clearly not going away a plunge now so exaggerated it is being referred to as the 'sternum front'. So ladies should invest in the appropriate undergarments, tape and covers and just embrace this trend. Leading the pack was Jessica Biel in Elie Saab couture featuring a plunging neckline, thigh high slits and 3-D embellishments. Easily one of the top three best gowns in my opinion. Another best dress of the night was Kristen Bell in a black sequin Jenny Packham gown which was styled to perfection. She later announced to the world on Instagram that she got a little help from butt pads. Love it when women keep it real.

 

Side part

 

The biggest hair trend was the side part hair, from sleek to soft hairdos, Hollywood's A-listers were sweeping their hair to one side for a soft fresh start to award season. Kristin Cavallari, Kristen Bell, Kerry Washington, Brie Larson among others, did this beautifully.

Best Dressed for the night: Kristin Bell, Carrie Underwood, Jessica Biel in my opinion.
