The Rope Fashion Project
No, your eyes are not deceiving you. Yes, this is rope.
‘The Rope Project’ by Lisu Vega, an America-born Venezuelan artist and fashion designer graced Jamaica’s most esteemed runway, Collection MoDa 2019. The pieces were strikingly beautiful and different, so Flair could not resist the urge to chat up a fashionary storm to get the story behind the art and the artist.
“The rope is a very emotional project,” said Vega. In 2015, after having her second baby, Vega suffered severe nightmares, which were emotionally crippling. Out of those ashes, she decided to create a collection of wearable sustainable art. “The fashion industry has a lot of waste and so this is my contribution to lower carbon footprint.”
The unique and unrepeatable pieces are versatile and lightweight. Using rope of bright vibrant colours which reminds her of her home city in Venezuela and the tropics, she considers the body a canvas. “Each creation is a stain that intervenes the body with various organic forms,” she said.
The Rope Project was born originally as a composition, an element of expression of the painting, taken to the dress. This project is made up of a series of pieces made of poly-silk that, over time, took a sustainable intention, due to the upcycling process carried out during its realisation.
What do you wear it with? Anything, but preferably with a solid colour underneath. Let your inner avant-garde steal the show as these unique pieces bring life to your outfit.
