Christmas might be over but who says the sweet delights have to be? You can indulge in Jamaica's all time favourite dessert during the holly jolly season all year round, courtesy of Buccaneer Rum Cake.

Food caught  up with Buccaneer Rum Cake’s parent company, Honey Bun Limited, to find out a little bit more about their tasty treasure. According to the Marketing Officer, Leah Carruthers, the unique brand of rum cakes was developed back in 1997 in an effort to identify exportable baked products, “At the time, we were already baking an excellent fruit cake so we packaged it and started to attend trade shows to get orders.” Planting that concept firmly in ‘sweet soil’ so to speak, it grew to amazing heights, flourishing and bearing fruit on the international scene.

But let's return to the root for a moment. Carruthers explained that consumers have always had a great love for their products, rum cake inclusive, “It is often preferred over any other brand because locals are our main focus. We have never given this product the push it deserved to gain the traction it could. It did is naturally since the proof is in taste,”

The popular flavour, rum fruit, is Carruthers’ ultimate fave. For her, the taste is addictive: it might have a lot to do with the injected cream inside the cake. They also have an original flavour, they carry coconut and they're currently in the process of launching a coffee rum cake within a few months. “These cakes have been doing really well on both locally and overseas! As for the flavours, we just provide the variety that our customers demand,” she added.

So, you're probably wondering, why the name Buccaneer? Simply put: it was their decadent desire to product an authentically Jamaican cake both in festive flavour and in title. Additionally, because the main ingredient comprises of good old fashioned local rum, they traced history back to the Caribbean's association with pirates: the name Buccaneer, as a result, received a ‘honeyed’ rebirth.

Foodies can expect an exciting  encounter with flavour after taking just one bite. And if you really want to keep in high spirits, you can creatively incorporate these cakes with other desserts. So what are you waiting for? Now that you're in the know, enjoy your sweet treats on the go with Buccaneer Rum Cake.
