Published:Thursday | August 13, 2020 | 12:00 AM

With National Rum Day fast approaching on Sunday, August 16, rum enthusiasts are looking for the best ways to celebrate and enjoy some of the world’s most beloved spirits.

Rum has played an integral part in Jamaica’s history and culture. And no one drives that point home quite like premium spirits giant, Appleton Estate.

Home to some of the world’s finest golden rums, some of which are used to create cocktails that are both smooth and exquisite. Among these premium expressions are the newly introduced Appleton Estate 8-Year-Old Reserve, that perfectly balances the delightfully smooth, tropical flavours swirling in the Mai Tai; and the Appleton Estate 12-Year-Old Rare Casks, which is the key ingredient in the Appleton Estate Rum Old Fashioned.

Mai Tai

Ingredients

2oz of Appleton Estate 8-Year-Old Reserve Rum

0.5oz of fresh lime juice

0.5oz orange curacao

0.5oz of orgeat syrup

Direction: Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with crushed ice (and cubes). Please note: you want to shake this cocktail until it’s chilled and then pour into a double old-fashioned glass. Then garnish with lime shell and mint sprig.

Rum Old Fashioned

The indulgent Appleton Estate 12-Year-Old Rare Casks expression is known to ‘sing’ in the Rum Old Fashioned cocktail. Luckily, you don’t have to be a mixologist to create this cocktail on your own.

Ingredients

2½ parts Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12-Year-Old

½ part sugar syrup

1 dash Peychaud’s bitters

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Orange peel

Direction: Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with large cubed ice. Next, you will want to stir quickly until the glass frosts then strain into the old-fashioned glass over a large block of ice or ice sphere. Afterwards, finish it off with an orange twist.
