Olympian Brandon Simpson will officially open his health juice bar on October 27.

In the last three months, the athlete, who is a multiple World Championships medallist, has been testing his four healthy natural juices, which will be exclusively made, packaged and distributed at 19 Herb McKenley Drive, formally known as Roosevelt Avenue, in Kingston.

According to 43-year-old quarter-miler-turned-entrepreneur, as an athlete for over a decade, it was only right that he took his health seriously for training and performance purposes. Additionally, caring for his ailing mother before she died, further cemented the importance of healthy shakes and drinks for daily intake.

“I want Jamaicans to get to a level of health I think is lacking in most of the industry. Juices [in Jamaica] nowadays are filled with sugar, lots of stimulants, lots of colouring and additives. What I wanted to do as a licensed health counsellor, was come to Jamaica and create a brand that would be healthy and that would give you [an] immediate reaction for the area in need,” Simpson told Food during an interview on Tuesday.

The products he created now fall under the brand Perform, which is also the name of his business establishment. They include Perform Red, Perform Green, Perform Pink and Lemon Grass Lemonade.

Of all the four products, Simpson’s favourite is the Lemon Grass Lemonade, because it includes a secret family recipe handed down to him by his mother and grandmother, but he enhanced it with a brewing method which made it more potent for relaxation.

Drinking all four drinks per day is a total package that Simpson says will allow one to have a healthy and relaxing day with the optimal energy, recovery and rest at nights.

After the launch event, he said there will be a line of products that go beyond just healthy drinks.

“The wonderful thing about the Perform shop is that we don’t only just stop at juices. We’re going to have teas farmed by our local farmers, organic products that will enhance all that we need to [be] enhanced. We’ll have coffee as well, wonderful salads, finger foods, pretty much whatever you’ll need to get through your day,” Simpson told Food.

“Perform is not just about performing in your body, but it’s also about performing in your art. We have a performance area around the back where you can do some spoken word for vocalists; or if you play acoustic instruments, we have a place around the back for you to come, while you are enjoying the products. One of the wonderful things about Perform products is that there are natural elements that are designed to bond with, elements that are naturally available in your body. That’s called bio-availability,” he said.
