FALMOUTH, Trelawny:

The Falmouth police have recovered 11 guns, most of which are high-powered weapons, including a rocket launcher, in the Scarlett Hall area of the parish yesterday.

Two men were arrested.

According to police reports, the men were travelling in a pickup in an easterly direction when they were signalled to stop. The weapons were found in a barrel, concealed in a taped parcel.

According to Deputy Superintendent Odeen Dennis, the men almost eluded the police because of the flashing of the lights by motorists to warn others of the police ahead. He added that the police saw what was happening and thwarted the bid to escape.

The weapons include a rocket launcher, an M16, an AK-47, a sniper rifle, one Intratec sub-machine, an Uzi submachine, two 9mm pistols and a .45 gun, along with two shotguns. Sixteen guns have been recovered in the parish since the start of the year.

Investigations continue. The names of the men were not released, as no charges were laid up to press time.
