JADE to host International Debating Competition
The Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment (JADE) will next year bring the Pan American University Debating Championship (PanAm UDC) to Jamaican shores.
The competition, which involves top universities from North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, is a regional spin-off of the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC).
Germaine Barrett, president of JADE, said that the competition will include more than 100 teams from universities across the hemisphere.
"We will have teams and adjudicators from all over the Americas descending on Montego Bay in April 2016 to engage in this three-day competition," he said.
He also said that the competition contributes to tourism and provides an opportunity for Jamaica to position itself as a destination for international competitions of this nature. To this end, JADE is seeking the support of the Government and the private sector in hosting PanAm UDC 2016.
"Hopefully, we can get the Government and the corporate sector to see the worth of this venture and see it as an investment in the young people, who will be the leaders of tomorrow," Barrett said.
