May 20 mention date for PNP councillor’s death by dangerous driving case

Sylvan Reid, the People's National Party councillor who is charged with causing death by dangerous driving in the 2013 death of Jevaughn Whitmore in St James, is to return to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on May 20, when his case will be mentioned.
Reid, who is councillor for the Salt Spring division in St James, was given the new court date and had his bail extended when his case was mentioned on Wednesday, as it was revealed that the prosecution had yet to complete full disclosure of documents to the defence.
Attorney-at-law Tamika Spencer, who is representing Reid, told presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie that a meeting is to be held with clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm, for the prosecution to complete its disclosure, and that a date was to be agreed upon to that effect.
Following a brief discussion, the case was set for mention on May 20.
The allegations in the case are that on November 9, 2013, at approximately 5 p.m., Whitmore, son of former national footballer Theodore Whitmore, was pushing his bicycle in the vicinity of the Retirement and Tucker intersection.

While still along the roadway, he was hit by a Mitsubishi Pajero sport utility vehicle, which was subsequently identified as belonging to Reid.
The younger Whitmore succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards and Reid, who it is alleged went to the Granville Police Station to report that the vehicle had been stolen, was identified by a witness as one of three individuals who were in the car at the time of the incident.
