Disclosure to be made in PNP councillor’s death by dangerous driving case

SYLVAN REID, the People’s National Party (PNP) councillor, who is charged with causing death by dangerous driving in the 2013 death of Jevaughn Whitmore, in St James had his bail extended when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Reid, who is councillor for the Salt Spring division in St James, had his case set for mention on April 22, to allow the prosecution time to give full disclosure of documents to his legal team.
“I had brief words with counsel (attorney) Tamika Spencer … and we need to disclose documents to counsel. We have agreed on April 22, for disclosure,” Natalie Malcolm, clerk of the court told presiding magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines.
“The matter will be mentioned on April 22,” said RM Hart-Hines, as she extended Reid’s bail to that date.
The allegations in the case are that, on November 9, 2013, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Whitmore, son of former national footballer Theodore Whitmore, was pushing his bicycle in the vicinity of the Retirement and Tucker intersection.
While still along the roadway, he was hit by a Mitsubishi Pajero Mark 2 motorcar, which was subsequently identified as belonging to Reid.
Young Whitmore succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards, and Reid – who, it is alleged, went to the Granville Police Station to report that the vehicle had been stolen – was identified by a witness as one of three individuals who were in the car at the time of the incident.
