I'm ready for anyone, says Portia as Blythe declares challenge

People's National Party (PNP) President Portia Simpson Miller has declared that she is prepared for any challenge to her leadership of the party.

"I'm ready for anyone and anything!" Simpson Miller, who is also the opposition leader, told The Gleaner yesterday, after Dr Karl Blythe, 70, and former Westmoreland Central member of parliament, was nominated for the post of president for the leadership of the 78-year-old party.

Simpson Miller, also 70, has faced questions about her 10-year-leadership of the party.

Quizzed whether Blythe, who lost in a presidential bid against her in 2006 was wasting his time, Simpson Miller said, "I will make no comment on that. Just wait for the votes," she said with a grin.

The PNP secretariat says Blythe submitted his nomination papers yesterday, a day before the process ends.
