Defence begins closing arguments in Oaklands murder trial

The defence team is slated to begin closing arguments when the murder trial of businessman Stephen Causewell resumes in the Supreme Court this morning.

Jacqueline Samuels Brown, Queen's Counsel, advised the court last Tuesday that the defence would not call any more witnesses or present any further evidence in the case.

A seven-member jury will continue hearing the case in which Causewell is charged with the murder of Nardia Mitchell, his ex-girlfriend, at her Oaklands apartment in St Andrew on July 16, 2008.

The prosecution had argued that Causewell was the last person to see Mitchell alive but did not present any evidence placing him in the apartment at the time of the murder. In fact, the defence had made a no-case submission, which was denied by high court judge Carol Lawrence Beswick.

"The ruling is that the matter will continue," she advised the court last Tuesday when the case resumed after a month's adjournment.
