Mixed reactions to Matthew in St Catherine

Residents of sections of St Catherine yesterday had mixed reactions regarding indications that Jamaica could be affected by the passage of Hurricane Matthew.

While some were taking the warnings seriously and were making the necessary preparations, others adopted a wait-and-see approach.

Perceval Campbell, a taxi operator of Fairview in Spanish Town, said he was taking the threat of the hurricane seriously. "I am taking this very seriously and I am making preparations in the event that it hits us," he told The Gleaner.

STOCKING UP

"I have stocked up on mainly canned stuff, candles, matches and water. I am ready to deal with Matthew," he said.

Spanish Town resident Jullian Hyatt said she would not be making any advance preparations for the hurricane because every time she prepares for an approaching storm, it changes course.

"The last time I spend money I had saved up for other business and it never came," she stated.

"This time around, I will wait until I am certain Matthew will hit Jamaica before I make any preparations."

Michelle Johnson, a bar operator of St Johns Road, shared a similar position, pointing out that she believes that Jamaica will only experience severe weather conditions.

"I am not going to make any preparation right now because every time I spend my money and make preparations nothing happens."
