Is Peace Day significant? ... The people respond

Yesterday marked the 21st year of recognition for Peace Day, under the theme 'Simmer Down! Let's Talk it Out! The Gleaner took to the streets of the capital to get the views of the people. Persons were asked the question: Is Peace Day significant, and why?

It is significant, especially with the recent increase in violence. All of us need to come together to make things better, and I just want to encourage persons to keep the peace and do good unto others.

It's a good day for all of us because we have too much crime. Every day should be a peace day, and I believe we should march for it. We need to cut down the crime and the prime minister needs to be more open on the situation.

This is a good initiative. I would like to see a lot of changes in the surroundings, as too many people [are] dying. We need the police to put a stop to the crime for the sake of peace.

If we have this day once per week, perhaps the crime rate would cut. We can even think about making it a public holiday or marching to really reinforce what Peace Day is about.

This day is more than significant to the country because of the outrageous acts of crime. The security forces need to be more equipped to carry out their duties, and I believe that will lessen the crime and ensure peace. I don't believe it should be a public holiday, as we're generally a peaceful people, so we don't need to mark a day for celebration.
