The St Catherine Health Department has served a 30-day notice on the National Water Commission (NWC) for breaches of the Public Health Act.

Acting Chief Public Health Officer for the parish, Grayson Hutchinson, says five of the NWC’s treatment plants in Spanish Town have been found to be hazardous to the health and well-being of residents.

Hutchinson told councillors at today’s monthly meeting of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation that the NWC has been warned to fix the problem.

He said failure may lead to prosecution.

The Acting Chief Public Health Officer said it is never the intention of the health department to pursue matters in court.

But he said where persons, institutions or agencies fail to cooperate, the department is duty bound to act.
