Pass laws to punish sex buyers - Church

Members of some of Jamaica's fast-rising churches and the lobby group Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society have proposed that lawmakers pass laws to punish persons who buy sex.
The church groups involved are the Jamaica Association of Full Gospel Churches, the Jamaica Union of Seventh-Day Adventists, the Jamaica Evangelical Alliance, the Church of God in Jamaica, Independent Churches of Jamaica and Pentecostal Union.
They told a parliamentary committee yesterday that they were against decriminalising prostitution, rejecting the recommendation by the Jamaica Aids Support that this be among the measures to respond to the HIV/AIDS cases among sex workers.
The groups say that the law against prostitution is a reminder that sex is not a commodity and punishing buyers would help preserve the family and the help the fight against trafficking in persons.
