PNP to take Trafigura case to Privy Council

There are indications that the Trafigura case is heading to the Privy Council based in the United Kingdom.

This after the legal team representing former president of the People’s National Party (PNP) Portia Simpson Miller and four other party functionaries met to decide their next move.

The meeting was held in the wake of last month’s ruling by the Court of Appeal which dismissed the application by Simpson Miller and the four PNP functionaries that has stalled the hearing into the Trafigura saga.

One member of the legal team, K.D Knight told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this afternoon that the ruling by the Appeal Court has raised some serious points of law that should be decided by the nation’s highest court.

Authorities in The Netherlands want Simpson Miller; PNP chairman, Robert Pickersgill; the party’s region three chairman, Phillip Paulwell; former general secretary, Colin Campbell; and businessman Norton Hinds to answer a number of questions about the $31 million donation to the party in 2006.

The donation was made while Jamaica had an oil-lifting agreement with the Dutch firm.
