Gully on Marcus Garvey Drive could pose flood risk

Debris piling up in a gully on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston may not be good news for companies in the area that suffered immensely from extensive flooding in September 2016.

Heavy showers in the last few days serve as a reminder that the start of the hurricane season was less than a month away. The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1.

The Gleaner news team visited Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Wallenford Coffee Company yesterday and saw garbage and other waste material in a gully that could pose a problem for companies in the area if it is not cleaned.

During the flood rains in September 2016, at least three warehouses with supplies of coffee beans were inundated.

The flooding resulted from a build-up of debris, including garbage and plastic, which blocked the drains and gully in the vicinity of Marcus Garvey Drive. The water from the gully overflowed into warehouses along the road.

Chief executive officer of Wallenford, Mark McIntosh, said he had no comment on the matter yesterday.
