Government, opposition reach out to Cuba following plane crash

The Government and Opposition have expressed condolence to the Government and people of Cuba following the aircraft crash last Friday which left more than 100 people dead.

"In this time of mourning, we share the deep pain of all Cubans, our closest neighbours, with whom we have enjoyed a long fraternal relationship over the years," said Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade.

She said the families who have lost loved ones are in the thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Jamaica.

"We very much hope that they will be find courage and solace even in this difficult time," added Johnson Smith.

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) said it was saddened by news of the crash.

"We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the Government and people of Cuba in this time of grief and sadness," added the PNP in a release.

It said Cuba has, over the decades, been a fine example of strength and resilience and it regrets this very sad development in that nation's aviation history.

"The party commiserates with the government and people of Cuba and offers condolences to all affected," said the PNP.
