Police Federation gets first female head

Corporal Arlene McBean is the new head of the Jamaica Police Federation.

McBean was elected immediately following the federation's 75th annual conference at Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Resort in St Ann last Thursday.

She is the first woman to head the body which represents rank-and-file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Efforts to get a comment from McBean have so far been unsuccessful, but members of the federation say she has been its director of training and development for some time.

'Hair Style Project'

The federation members say in the 2016-2017 she spearheaded training in many different areas, including advocacy and representation in collaboration with the Norman Manley Law School.

According to the sources, it was McBean who led the 'Hair Style Project' which led to changes in the rules governing how female members of the JCF can groom their hair.

Inspector Sheldon Gordon was elected the general secretary of the federation, with the other members of the executive being Sergeant Patrae Rowe, corporal Doris Stewart, detective constables Nigel Murphy and Tameca Thomas, and Inspector Carol Chisholm.
