She was the only girl among a number of students who were asked to give their pick for the 2018 World Cup Games. Kourtnee Smith was just as competent, however, and expressed confidence that Germany would win.

Smith, who plays midfield for Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory School in St Andrew, indicated that she was anxiously awaiting the competition, which begins Thursday, June 14.

"My favourite team is Germany. They have a very good football programme and I just love Germany. More than likely they will win, but I think Brazil and Belgium can also win," she told The Gleaner. "What I am looking forward to most is the finals," said Smith.

Her schoolmate, Sajahta Marley Cole, was just as excited about the upcoming tournament but his pick was Brazil.

"Brazil is my favourite side because they produce the best football players. They lost the last time, but that was four years ago; I think they have a chance this year," said the 12-year-old.

"The only teams that could present some challenge would be Argentina, France and Germany. I'm looking forward to the finals and winning."

The students at Rollington Town Primary School in Kingston were equally upbeat.

Thyah Irving, 12, said that he was confident that Brazil would win the football championship.

"Brazil is the best team in the World Cup; they have been my side from ever since. I like their attacking style and they have the best defensive line," he said.

Horace Banner had a slightly different view: "Spain is my favourite side and they are going to win because we have the best attacking midfielder. Spain inspires me as a football player myself."

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will run through to July 15.
