A member of the St Catherine South police was yesterday undergoing counselling following the death of her five-year-old son, who allegedly shot himself with her service pistol.

The incident occurred Saturday at the policewoman's home in the community of Monza in Portmore, St Catherine.

Reports are that, around 11 a.m., the constable arrived home and placed the weapon, a Glock pistol, in or on top of a wardrobe inside the house.

Some time after, a loud explosion was heard and the child, Vernard McCardy Salmon, was found clutching the weapon and lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head. Initial reports are that he shot himself in the mouth.

He was taken to the Apex Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.

The matter is being investigated by the St Catherine South police division.
