WESTERN BUREAU:

Melissa Harriot, the St James woman who allegedly stole a baby from another woman six months ago at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St James, has been ordered to stand trial in the St James Circuit Court on September 25 following a committal hearing in the St James Parish Court.

Harriot, who is charged with child stealing, remained composed during the committal hearing as the trial date was announced by presiding parish judge Kacia Grant. The committal hearing was held to determine whether the case should remain at the parish court or be transferred to the circuit court.

The court also made a new bail offer to Harriot in the sum of $200,000 with two sureties. A stop order has also been placed for her at all ports of entry.

According to reports, on January 4, the infant and her mother were visiting the hospital when the mother reportedly left the baby in Harriot’s care to use the restroom.

Upon her return, both Harriot and the baby were missing.

Days later, the police found the child with Harriot and her boyfriend in Norwood, St James.

Harriot was arrested and charged.
