The Hanover-based Tryall Fund came good for 181 students from western Jamaica on Wednesday when the renowned charity handed out scholarship cheques for more than US$230,000 ahead of the new school year.

The awardees, a mix of first-timers and repeat beneficiaries, ranged from students at the preparatory level through to the university level.

“The Tryall Fund is proud to be able to recognise the future leaders of Jamaica – because that is what we think of you – and to contribute to your education,” said Alice Needle, a homeowner at the Tryall Club and co-chairman of the Tryall Fund Scholarship Committee.

According to Needle, 263 students applied for educational funding, and after careful evaluation, the 181 students selected were considered the most deserving candidates. She urged the recipients to make the best of the opportunities and use the funds they received wisely.

Speaking with The Gleaner following the awards presentation, Needle said this year marks the 10th anniversary of the scholarship programme.

She also pointed out that the number of applicants and awardees increase annually. Last year, there were 166 applicants, of which 128 were awarded scholarships.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness and former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson sent messages of encouragement and congratulations to the awardees, advising them to take full advantage of the opportunity to make themselves and their country proud.

The Tryall Fund is a charitable, non-profit organisation operating out of The Tryall Club in Sandy Bay, Hanover. It raises funds from homeowners on the property towards supporting health, education and other causes in the wider community.
