Things are cooking for Miss Ina!

NINETY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD INA Rankling was a picture of joy on Labour Day yesterday as the Guanaboa Vale police and community members erected a spanking new kitchen for her in Old Road, Kitson Town, St Catherine.

District Constable Antoinette Keddo said she remembers getting a call at the station in February about a fire there.

“We (the police) decided to build her one for Labour Day. We contacted businesses, received building materials and this is the effort,” Keddo told The Gleaner.

It appears that Rankling, a retired shopkeeper, is still benefiting from the charity she showed decades ago.

That’s the view of St Catherine businessman Michael Archer, who visited her home yesterday and made a contribution to the project.

“Anyone can fall on hard times. Therefore, I find it a joy to help Miss Ina, as she was a kind woman to me as a child,” said Archer.

“She ... would give me a biscuit every weekend when I visited the orange orchard in Guanaboa Vale.”

Rankling was full of praise for the good Samaritans who turned out yesterday. She said her long-time caregiver, Noel O’Connor, had been cooking “under di piece of zinc”.

“This is really a blessing to see that finally mi a get some help,” Rankling, who moves around in a wheelchair, said.

O’Connor said that he cares for the nonagenarian daily out of a sense of duty.

“I have being here for more than 30 years.

“Although it is a task, I do it, as I remember when things were different, and that is the continued inspiration,” he said.
