A security guard is now battling for life in the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St James after he was shot and seriously injured in a daring daylight robbery at a supermarket along Market Street in the parish capital.

The security guard, whose identity is being withheld was shot, reportedly as he tried to disarm one of the robbers.

According to reports, shortly after 12:30 p.m, two men wearing masks entered the supermarket and held one of the operators at gunpoint.

They then demanded money, but before the operator could comply, the security guard intervened and got into a tussle with one of the gunmen.

He guard was shot multiple times by the other gunman.

Following the shooting, the gunmen ran from the supermarket and escaped in the direction of King Street.

It was not immediately clear whether they took any money.

When The Gleaner visited the scene, the shaken supermarket operators would not offer any comment.

However, one bystander was angered by the attack.

"Dem yah man too dry eye, mi cah believe seh di man dem really a come carry off robbery right yah so inna broad daylight,” said a taxi operator.

He said as the gunmen escaped, they fired several shots into the air.

Earlier this year, businessman Kenneth Li and his personal security guard were shot dead by armed robbers in the same vicinity.

The robbers stole a huge sum of money, believed to be several million dollars, which was being transported to a bank.
