Brace for more heavy rains

The country has been put on alert to expect more showers as a tropical depression is expected to be in the vicinity of Jamaica today.

Meteorologists said yesterday that there was a strong possibility that a new storm could be named by late this evening.

Satellite imagery indicated a large area of showers and thunderstorms that accompanies the depression, which extended across the Central Caribbean south of Hispaniola to the coast of Colombia. Additionally, environmental conditions were said to be conducive for development of the system over the weekend.

Jamaica is still likely to experience significantly increased rainfall, periods of thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds today.

In an update yesterday afternoon, the Meteorological Service, Jamaica said the island’s weather would continue to be impacted by the tropical depression up to Wednesday.

Fishers on the cays and banks are urged to return to the mainland immediately and other small craft operators in the island’s coastal waters are advised to return to port. Those in port should not venture out.

The island recently suffered billions of dollars in infrastructural and property damage from rains associated with Tropical Storm Zeta.
