Prominent attorney-at-law Donovan Jackson died Monday morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies. He was 64.

It was reported that he complained of not feeling well on Sunday and was taken to hospital.

Jackson was a partner in the firm Nunes, Scholefield, DeLeon & Co (NSD) and was in charge of the commercial department. He joined the firm in 1994 and became a partner in 1995. He was also a notary public.

After graduating from the Norman Manley Law School, he joined the law firm Myers, Fletcher & Gordon (MF&G) where he was eventually appointed senior associate. He was also a past student of St George’s College.

Queen’s Counsel Maurice Manning, a partner in NSD, described Jackson on Monday as a sharp mind. He said behind Jackson’s quiet demeanour was a real fire for fairness and justice.

“He was astute, thoughtful, and generous to a fault with his time, especially for young counsel,” Manning told The Gleaner.

Jackson also worked on major cases for the Jamaican Bar Association and Jamaicans for Justice and did so without fanfare or remuneration, Manning disclosed.

He described Jackson as an excellent commercial lawyer whose passing has left a vacuum.

Queen’s Counsel Sandra Minott-Phillips, partner at MF&G, said Jackson was an affable gentleman and friend.

Minott-Phillips said that during his time at MF&G, Jackson shared a wealth of knowledge about personal-injury matters with colleagues.

Jackson is survived by his wife Ann-Marie and four children.
