Cohort selected for 2023 Chevening Scholarships
ANOTHER cohort of Jamaican scholars will get the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom after being awarded the 2023 Chevening Scholarships.
Fourteen Jamaicans have been selected to read for their master’s degrees under the programme.
This year’s scholars are Kevhvan Graham, Laura-Lee Lynch, Samantha Johnson, Olivia Shaw-Lovell, Natasha Burnett, Raymond Warren, Monique Delaney, Karen Lloyd, Shanakay Dyer, Je-Hiel Smith, Mikhail McLeod, Brenton Williams, Edward Campbell and Deandra Morrison.
The scholars will pursue their studies in the UK in a variety of fields, including engineering, economics/economic crime, data science and analytics, public health, disaster management, international development, law, communications, and regulation and compliance.
The scholars were chosen from a shortlisted cohort of 65, who were selected from a wider candidate pool of more than 300.
Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards programme aimed at developing global leaders. It offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chevening awards.
The 2023 cohort will increase the Jamaican alumni to more than 300 since 1984, many of whom are trailblazers across Jamaican society.
Speaking at a reception on Thursday evening, British High Commissioner to Jamaica Judith Slater said, “These successful scholars will be studying a wide variety of subjects and are proof of the depth of talent in Jamaica. I am proud that the UK continues to support the development of some of Jamaica’s most promising young people.
“The next Chevening application period opens soon. I encourage all would-be scholars to apply for a Chevening award.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who attended the event, seized the opportunity to congratulate the scholars on their achievement and encouraged them to be stellar ambassadors for Jamaica while overseas.
The application period for Chevening Scholarships for the academic year 2024-25 can be found at www.chevening.org. The application period will open in mid-September and will close in mid-November.
