Cabinet, parliamentary colleagues wish Tufton speedy recovery
Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton yesterday proved the value of wearing a helmet while biking, if even in the most inconvenient way.
The health minister, while on one of his regular Sunday morning rides, was hit from his bicycle by a motor vehicle in which popular dancehall entertainer Valiant was travelling.
While the minister broke his wrist, he was able to count his blessings.
“He was riding his bicycle when the accident occurred, and he was wearing his helmet,” Dr Dana Morris Dixon, minister of information, told The Gleaner yesterday. “The helmet prevented more serious damage, and that is why we encourage all riders of bicycles and motorbikes to always wear a helmet.”
Morris Dixon, who was speaking with The Gleaner early in the afternoon, said at the time that Tufton was in surgery and that his doctors had indicated that they expected he would have a full recovery.
She noted that the entire Cabinet was wishing him a speedy recovery.
In a post to Instagram around 1 p.m., Tufton showed a photograph of himself in his hospital bed at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) with Valiant checking in on him.
“Well this Sunday wasn’t planned! Took a fall this morning on my bicycle,” Tufton said in the caption attached to the photograph. “Counting myself very lucky because it could have been worse!! Thanks to God and to all who have me in their prayers and sent messages.
“Also, thanks to Valiant, who was involved, for rushing me to UHWI and to the team of doctors and nurses who are currently attending to me.”
Well wishes
Commenting on the post, Opposition Leader Mark Golding sent his best wishes.
“Glad you’re ok, Chris. Wishing for you a speedy recovery. God is good!” Golding said.
Along with Golding and among those also commenting were opposition parliamentarian Lisa Hanna, media personality Yendi Phillipps, and music producer Rvssian.
Earlier, Prime Minister Andrew Holness also wished Tufton a speedy recovery.
In an official statement from the People’s National Party (PNP), Junior Shadow Spokesperson for Health and Wellness Jesse James Clarke extended best wishes to Tufton for a swift and full recovery from his injuries.
“Special commendations are due to the staff at the UHWI for their prompt and dedicated efforts in ensuring the minister’s recovery. The PNP trusts that the authorities will settle this case swiftly,” Clarke said.
