Don't give undisciplined students free rein
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Regarding the letter to the editor titled 'Ministry of Education failing our students', written by Marisa McPherson and published September 17, I am very delighted that she shed light on the situation.
Something has to be done to ensure that schoolteachers are able to teach the various subjects with some level of satisfaction. In spite of the fact that curricula are so stressful, undisciplined students pose yet another challenge for me and my colleagues of the fraternity.
Children nowadays are less willing to submit to rules and regulations on school grounds. A wide cross section of our society has been lambasting teachers for a lack of assertiveness and patience with their young charges. Our hands are tied and we are left to ponder our next move.
The Ministry of Education has to be balanced in its expectations for both teachers and students. It can only be counterproductive if we seek to punish the teachers every time.
I am having a very difficult time with certain students who are not interested in school but are more concerned about their tight pants and their hairpieces. It takes tremendous strength of character to instill discipline in these ill-mannered students. The indiscipline has to stop and we the schoolteachers need to take our grouses to the Ministry of Education for them to rectify the situation once and for all.
