LETTER: Cotton for Sugar

THE EDITOR, SIR:
I read your Letter of the Day concerning the death of King Sugar. So let it be, and let us move on, learning from the past. Let us now plant sea island cotton on the land where we have in the past planted sugar, gin the cotton here, then milling it here too in making cloth as we did at the Ariguanabo mills, then having our clothing manufacturers making the best of cotton clothes for the high end niches over the world.
And think of us having our very nice ladies modelling such clothes here too. Make ourselves the centre - at least a well recognised centre - of fashion for the world. We begin by replacing on the sugar lands sea island cotton, which is said to be the best in the world.
Sugar, is sugar is sugar. Why bother with that when sea island is not so, but the world's best! We get from that jobs, Jobs, JOBS, and earn foreign exchange, and this in a sustainable manner. Please, let it be financed by LDI not FDI, by at worst, the government doing the initial financing of the endeavours and later divesting it on our Stock Exchange. This is for me, INDEPENDENCE.
So Editor, let us replace King Sugar with Queen Cotton.
