A sad affair

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The whole Palisadoes/airport roadblock affair was inevitable. It was always going to happen because for far too long in this country, we have allowed persons to believe that they should always be allowed to do whatever they like, no matter the consequences or effect their actions have on others.

Those persons attending the party on New Year's Day felt like they should be allowed to park on the roadway because it was convenient for them. If it meant that others would be blocked from going to or coming from the airport, then so be it. This is the way we think as a people, and it is evidenced every day on our nation's roadways. A man wants to operate a taxi but does not want to go through the hassle of getting legally cleared to do so, so he simply runs a 'robot' operation. Traffic congestion? Just drive on the soft shoulder and cut in line at the front because 'I need to get where I'm going and can't be bothered to wait a long time'.

We have nurtured our people to believe that they should always get their way and if not, they should cry discrimination. This is our culture. It is in fact a sad affair.
