A culture of lawlessness

THE EDITOR, Sir:

What does the recent blocking of the Palisadoes road, and navigating the
Half-Way Tree Square, have in common? A subculture of blatant lawlessness.
Within this cultural milieu, the police can do very little.
Try to navigate approaching Half-Way Tree Square in the right lane going south and it is a nightmare as the lane is constantly blocked by taxicabs either picking up or letting off passengers.
And the presence of police officers does very little to ease the free flow, as it is always a cat-and-mouse game, as when the policemen are monitoring one section of the stretch, the lawlessness continues at the other.
This culture of lawlessness has become normative and is multiplied repeatedly throughout the country.
Will we ever learn? Yes, but we must begin by teaching our children civic pride, respect for authority, respect for useful institutions in preparation for a new age and a new people.
Then, and only then, will we be able to see the results.
Yes, we have lost an entire generation to a culture of lawlessness and there
is no quick fix, but we must now attempt to change the picture or continue paying the price.
