Spineless NEPA should enact parrotfish ban

Published:Sunday | October 21, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is interesting that having declared that they were close to a ban on parrotfish, Peter Knight cannot recall what issues were put forth by the Fisheries Division, thereby preventing the ban from going through. This appears almost spineless on his part.

It would be instructive to know what these issues were so that the public can know and also take a stand. This has more to do with the survival of a species of fish and the well-being of our marine environment than the total livelihood of the fishermen and that sector.

Like so many other areas where perpetrators of a particular practice have been trained to protect the subject of their former actions, these fishermen can be trained to leave the parrotfish alone!

I urge those in positions of responsibility, like Mr Knight and the head of the Fisheries Division, to reconsider their positions for the benefit of the parrotfish, given their critical role also in the well-being of our coral reefs, etc.
