Gun smuggling our biggest problem

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Having trust and confidence in the police will not solve Jamaica's crime problem significantly. Having good relationships with the police and armed forces in certain communities will not bring down crime.
There is a gun trade that is strongly grounded in Jamaica and which has been empowered by foreign linkages. But our authorities seem helpless in rooting it out.
Jamaica does not only have a crime problem, but also a massive gun problem. We have heard many times that illegal guns are coming into the island. Why is it happening?
It could be that the security guards and other officials at our airports and seaports are indulging in corruption or incompetence. Furthermore, with the access
to technology, I believe the authorities should be able to identify those who are smuggling guns into Jamaica as well as others in the distribution chain.
Finally, why, for God's sake, are the Government and the Opposition not talking directly about Jamaica's biggest problem: the gun trade?
