Treat teachers better, please

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I recently read a piece in your newspaper dated April 9, 2019 outlining the incompetence and inefficiencies of Region Four of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information. I, too, have submitted a copy of my degree certificate to the ministry for it to be processed in order to be properly remunerated. Six months after this submission, I checked on the documents. To my surprise, my documents were just sitting in the ministry and had not been sent to the Evaluations and Qualification Committee (EQC).

This is simply an unacceptable way to treat teachers who are giving service to the nation’s children.

The remuneration packages for public-sector workers, including teachers, police and nurses, have always been a challenge within our society. The truth is that the Government can never fully pay for the services of public-sector workers. All we are asking for is a livable wage. It is not fair for teachers to be waiting until eternity to receive our correct salaries.

The ministry needs to act on this issue and process these documents in a timely manner. Stop putting them away in filing cabinets for months and years. Stop losing people’s documents and then asking them to resubmit as a result of your lacklustre attitude.
