New ‘highways’ not friendly to pedestrians

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Something needs to be done about the reckless Coaster bus drivers who continue to block traffic at the busy Constant Spring and Shortwood roads intersection, especially in the mornings and between 2 o’clock and 3 o’clock in the afternoons.

Also, there needs to be more pedestrian crossings along Constant Spring and Hagley Park roads? Did the National Works Agency (NWA) forget that roads are not used by motorists alone? How are students and employees of the various businesses along these busy commercial corridors expected to get from one side of the road to the other?

And why were concrete medians placed along these corridors? Have they been reclassified as highways? Wouldn’t flat medians, similar to those on Trafalgar Road, make more sense and also be more pedestrian-friendly?

And is the NWA going to accept the sloppy work in regard to the raised manhole covers along these roads? I hope that the Chinese will be required to fix these traffic hazards.

And last, what if there is a fire or major accident along one of these ‘highways’? Where would a fire truck travelling from Half-Way Tree, proceeding down Hagley Road, be expected to turn to put out a fire on the other side of the road?
