Annie Palmer costume controversy expected

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I’m not surprised by the controversy surrounding the Annie Palmer costume worn by Miss Universe Jamaica given the very sensitive issues of slavery associated with it and the discomfort many have with this past and the uncertainty, at times, as to what aspects of our heritage and culture we should fully embrace and celebrate.

Moreover, we seem to strive for and thrive on controversies and celebrations. They are for us like oxygen, which is essential for survival.

The controversies provide golden opportunities for many to express themselves, cast blame, manufacture excuses, and simply vent their frustrations regarding our socio-economic challenges and harsh realities.

The celebrations are welcome distractions, creating balance and serving as an outlet preventing or minimising eruptions, and provide that needed escape from reality.

And, no less important, the celebrations also act as a recess or time out to recharge and re-energise to continue creating controversies.
