Joe Biden scored in presidential debate

THE EDITOR, Madam:
I don’t believe the final presidential debate changed opinions either way. Although the debate was more civil and restrained, which allowed both candidates to be heard, I think their base, in terms of support, will basically remain intact. Joe Biden was constantly attacked by President Trump for not doing enough as vice-president in eight years. Biden gave a good response when he replied, “We had a Republican Congress!” The silence was deafening.
Biden repeatedly presented himself as a president for all Americans. Trump, on other hand, referenced Republican states and Democratic states. Trump did not answer many questions; he talked of allegations and rumours about Biden and his family.
Biden Stayed on Point
The final question was about the inauguration speech each would give. Biden stayed on point, repeating his message of being a president for all Americans, including those who did not vote for him, while Trump strayed from the point, responding in a campaign-like message as if they would still be campaigning on the day of the inauguration!
I think Biden scored more points overall, especially on matters such as the inadequate response to the pandemic, racial inequality, climate change, and immigration. He spoke about options for Dreamers to achieve a path to citizenship and bemoaned the plight of hundreds of children separated at the borders who could not be reunited with their parents. The Trump administration has weakened international relations. It has pulled out of agreements and damaged relations with close allies. Trump’s policies have been anti-immigration and controversial most of the times. The United States is a superpower, a country whose policies affect much of the world in some way or the other. Naturally, the world will be watching closely as Americans decide their fate and future on November 3.
