Cults becoming common in Ja

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Brainwashing has become commonplace in Jamaica. It is being fuelled through various social media outlets, in the extremist, exaggerated and deceitful words spouted from various sources, as well as certain pulpits and political platforms.

The cult-like brainwashing and adoration employed by ‘His Excellency’ Kevin O. Smith, leader of the Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries, to accomplish his seemingly self-serving motives has come to light, albeit in the wake of three deaths and numerous troubling revelations.

However, a case could also be made about the kind of brainwashing some politicians and political leaders engage in on a regular basis. Instead of being truthful, such persons consistently exaggerate, twist the truth and tell downright lies to their supporters, and to the wider population, about their political opponents. Their primary aim is to promote themselves, their political agendas, their party and, ultimately, winning elections. Like cult leaders, some politicians make promises they can’t keep. After winning over the trust and admiration of a sizeable enough flock of voters and becoming victorious at the polls, over time, they abuse their power in very self-serving, corrupt and manipulative ways.

Last, like ‘His Excellency’ Kevin O. Smith, their names become adorned with titles like ‘Most Honourable’, ‘Honourable’, and ‘His Lordship’, even though many of them are unworthy and undeserving of the designations.
