AI training vital for students and teachers

Recent studies have highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing the teaching-and-learning process. However, to fully harness its benefits, educators and students alike must be trained in its use, akin to traditional instructional tools.

A study published on PsyPost on March 26, titled, ‘Artificial intelligence and the emergence of generative synthesthesia’, explores the link between ChatGPT, an AI language model, and declining academic performance and memory loss. While this may raise concerns, it also underscores the importance of understanding and effectively utilising AI in educational settings. Rather than shying away from AI, educators must embrace it as a powerful tool for maximising learning outcomes.

One of the key advantages of AI in education is its ability to personalise learning experiences. AI-powered systems can analyse vast amounts of data to tailor educational content to individual student needs, preferences, and learning styles. By providing targeted feedback and adaptive learning pathways, AI can help students reach their full potential.

Further, AI can augment the role of educators by automating routine tasks such as grading, allowing teachers to focus more on providing personalised support and guidance to students. This not only saves time but also enables educators to devote more attention to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills.

However, realising the full potential of AI in education requires proper training and integration into pedagogical practices. Educators need to develop a deep understanding of how AI works and how it can be effectively incorporated into their teaching methods. This includes learning how to curate and evaluate AI-generated content, as well as how to interpret and utilise data insights to inform instructional decisions.

Moreover, students must also be equipped with the necessary skills to interact with AI systems responsibly and ethically. This includes understanding the limitations and biases inherent in AI algorithms, as well as how to critically evaluate information generated by AI. By empowering students with these skills, educators can foster a generation of digital citizens who are adept at navigating the complexities of the digital age.

Incorporating AI into education is not about replacing human educators but rather about enhancing their capabilities and expanding the possibilities for teaching and learning. By leveraging AI as a complementary tool, educators can create more engaging, personalised, and effective learning experiences for students across diverse educational settings.

The integration of artificial intelligence in education holds tremendous promise for maximising learning potential. However, to realise this promise, educators and students must be trained in its use, similar to traditional instructional tools. By embracing AI and incorporating it into pedagogical practices, educators can create more dynamic and personalised learning environments that empower students to thrive in the digital age.
