Appoint school resource officers

THE EDITOR, Madam:

How many more children should be injured due to the inadequate amount of security? How many more parents must be at work and continuously worry about their children’s security?

In October 2023, I had written a letter to editor which recommended that implementing adequate school resource officers can assist in mitigating the fighting in schools. Again, I implore the Ministry of Education to increase the number of school resource officers and appoint them as special district constables. This will allow them to act within the school areas. They will oversee the student’s safety and disrupt any form of fight. I also ask the school boards to act and be effective.

Don’t leave it upon the school principal and vice principals alone to defend themselves. Within one week, one child was killed and several injured due to unruly behaviour by children within the school area. What is the response? Sit and investigate while the fights continue. The issue at hand will not be solved overnight, but a system needs to be in place. Relying on the police alone cannot be the solution. It needs to start with the schools and by extension, the Ministry of Education.
