Sligoville main road in deplorable condition

Published:Saturday | September 7, 2024 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing to express my outrage and disappointment at the deplorable state of the Sligoville main road, a critical alternate route to the Bog Walk Gorge and a vital artery for commuters.

The road’s deteriorating conditions pose a significant threat to the safety of the thousands of drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists who use it daily. Despite its importance, the National Works Agency (NWA) has neglected to maintain the road, leaving it riddled with potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces.

Patchwork repairs have been sporadic and inadequate, failing to address the underlying structural issues. This approach is not only inefficient but also wasteful, as the patches quickly deteriorate, requiring repeated repairs.

Further, the neglect of the drains along the road has contributed significantly to the deterioration of the road. The drains are often clogged and overflowing, causing water to accumulate on the road and erode the surface. This lack of maintenance has created a vicious cycle of damage and disrepair.

With the Bog Walk Gorge being a critical transportation corridor, it is imperative that the Sligoville main road is properly maintained to provide a safe and reliable alternative route. The NWA needs to adopt a more comprehensive and sustainable approach to maintaining the Sligoville main road, including:

– Conducting a thorough assessment of the road’s condition

– Developing a long-term plan for rehabilitation and maintenance

– Allocating sufficient resources to complete the works in a timely manner

– Engaging with the community to ensure that our concerns are heard and addressed

– Regularly maintaining and clearing the drains to prevent water accumulation and damage

The people of Lauriston division and commuters who rely on this road deserve better. The NWA needs to address this issue urgently.
